Among the most ancient types of jars, the best known is the woodcock jug which owes its name to the shape of the pourer for oil which is similar to that of a bird’s beak: thin and pointed like that of the woodcock . These amphorae were above all measures that in the Renaissance period were expressed in barrels: liquids such as oil, wine, but also wheat and grains in general were measured with these jars, whose size and extent were controlled and for this, as a guarantee, the seals of the municipality of Florence were imprinted on the clay.
